Midtown

Many consider Midtown to be the cultural hub of Boston.

Welcome to Midtown

Midtown, also referred to as Downtown Crossing, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Boston and, as such, is historically significant. Much of the area was decimated during the Great Fire of 1872, but was rebuilt along the narrow street grid that still exists today.

Many consider Midtown to be the cultural hub of Boston, with many theaters and performance venues that light up at night. Dining – everything from historic taverns to world class establishments – can be found side-by-side. Department stores and locally owned shops co-exist, many along the main fares, Washington and Summer Streets. Green space - Boston Common, located just west of Downtown Crossing, and the nearby Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway - offer residents and visitors a quiet respite. Emerson and Suffolk Universities both have a presence here.

So much allure has made Midtown very desirable and very in-demand.

Like the central business districts in many other cities, Midtown has experienced a revitalization in recent years. This included a clean-up of some of the grittier areas, which accompanied the building boom of luxury condominium residences.
